CHAPTER 9

"Mom! Is that you?"

Her eyes were bugging out of her head, and she pulled her wild curls away from her faze with wide-spread fingers. I scrambled to my knees, scraping them on the rock.

Knees. I had knees again, the tail was gone.

"Mom!" Her hands shifted to cover her eyes, and her voice raised in pitch. Right. I was naked. I stumbled to where I had left my clothes folded on the rocks and slid into them as quickly as possible. My skin was still wet, so they stuck to me, but at least I was covered.

"Charley! What are you doing here?"

Charley yanked her hair down. “What you mean, what am I doing here? Why are you making out with an alligator?"

Norbert had settled into his spot on the rocks to sun, reminding me just how fast he was. He winked at me. "I wasn't making out with him. I was swimming with him."

"Do you think that's better?" Charley's voice reached her shriekiest shriek, which meant she was about to scream. And Charley’s scream could be heard for miles. Not that I blamed her. She’d just rolled up on her mother hanging out on the shore with a giant alligator. Naked. With a tail.

"Charley, I can explain all of this. I know it looks weird but—“

"Looks weird? It is weird!" She waved her hands at Norbert then pointed at my legs. "You had a tail when I walked up. A fishtail."

"Technically, it was a mermaid's tail. Although, now that you mention it, I don't know how they’re different." My hair was dripping down my back and along the sides of my face, and a sudden wave of extreme thirst and fatigue covered me. "Honey, can we just go up to the house and have a drink? It will give you a chance to calm down, you can tell me what you're doing here, and I can explain all of… this."

Her mouth worked, like she had something to say. Her eyes bugged out of her face. She whirled around and stomped toward the house. I waved to Norbert and followed.

Her shriek returned when we reached the kitchen. “What the hell?"

Oh, yeah. Somehow, I'd managed to forget that there was a bed in the kitchen. I sighed. “It's been a long and interesting couple of weeks. Why don't we sit outside?"

I stopped her as she headed toward the cafe. “No, let's go out front. To the porch. I want to make sure I'm there when Aunt Ruth comes back.”

I grabbed two glasses of Sam's peach iced tea from the refrigerator, making my way around the debris, and joined Charley outside on the porch. She was sitting on the edge of the step, just inside the last of the shade. With a surprised glance at my watch, I realized I was in the water far longer than I thought.

I plopped down next to her, my shorts making a squishing sound as they hit the wood, and handed her a glass. She clinked it to mine in a silent cheers.
